Writers’ Block
Writers’ Block is the first part of a trilogy of work that also includes Beat Freak and The Journal of an Existential Believer. It is a two-act play that tells the story of two men who arrive at the same location after answering the same advert for an unspecified job. Very soon, it becomes apparent that things are not what they seem, as the protagonists are taken on a surreal journey of the mind. The play uses a blend of comedy and fast-paced action to explore the very notion of theatre itself and to philosophically examine such concepts as choice, freedom, destiny, reality, mental health, the writing process, and identity.
Writers’ Block was written in 1996. It debuted at the Quay Arts Centre in Newport, on the Isle of Wight, that same year. Since then, it has been performed over 50 times at various venues in the UK.
Beat Freak
Beat Freak is the second part of a trilogy of work that includes Writers’ Block and The Journal of an Existential Believer. It is a one-man show based on the writer’s picaresque journey across Europe in the tumultuous year of 2001. Combining comedy, music, and storytelling, the story continues to explore the themes first addressed in Writers’ Block.
Beat Freak was written between 2001 and 2006. It was first performed by Graham Macfarlane at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2006. Since then, it has been performed at various venues and festivals around the UK.
The scripts for both will be available in a new book published soon.
Footage from performances will also be available soon.
